St. Louis to Host ASQ World Conference in 2010

The ASQ World Conference on Quality and Improvement (WCQI) is coming to St. Louis in May 2010. ASQ St. Louis Section 1304 will host this international quality event. Thousands of quality professionals from all over the world will be in St. Louis to learn about the latest developments in quality.

The WCQI provides an opportunity for local members to participate in presentations, certification exams, leadership training, award ceremonies, and team competitions; visit exhibitors, and attend ASQ national society meetings and events. We are excited to host this world class event and to have this opportunity to showcase the city and the faces of quality in St. Louis.

6th Annual SIUC ASQ Spring Conference

The Sixth Annual ASQ Spring Conference at SIUC will be held Thursday, April 24, 2008 on the second floor of the SIUC campus Student Center, 1225 Lincoln Drive, Carbondale, IL. Check-in begins at 8:00 a.m., sessions start at 8:30 a.m. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. Participants may attend 100- or 200-minute sessions.

Chris Anderson, Brenda Bishop and Steve Mundwiller of the ASQ St. Louis Secion are conducting sessions in Lean Thinking Experience, Experimental Design and Careers in Quality, respectively.

ASQ St. Louis Achieves High Honors from ASQ National

ASQ St. Louis has achieved the Total Quality Level of the 2006-07 Section Management Process. This is the highest level of the SMP and is awarded to ASQ St. Louis for proving “its dedication and commitment to serving its members.”

ASQ St. Louis achieved the Total Quality Level last year as well. The section will be honored at ASQ’s World Conference in May.

We also received recognition for section planning and section basics for the year 2007-2008.

Dennis Arter Delivering ASQ Public Courses in St. Louis

Dennis Arter, an ASQ Fellow and one of our Spring Conference Keynote Speakers this year, will be delivering two of the public courses being offered by ASQ National in St. Louis in November.

Quality Audits for Improved Performance

This is a basic course for both internal and external auditing. Move from compliance (policing) to management (performance improvement) auditing. It covers preparation, performance, reporting and closure. The curriculum follows the ASQ Certified Quality Auditor Body of Knowledge and assumes participants have no auditing experience. Learn how to present audit findings such that managers want to change current practices.

Process-Based Auditing

Designed for managers and professional staff already familiar with fundamental quality auditing concepts, this one-day course focuses on business processes and how to audit them. The course is especially useful for those faced with assessing the process approach to quality management called for in ISO 9001:2000. This workshop will show you how to move your current audit program from boring to brilliant. All aspects of the audit (planning, performing, reporting and closure) are covered.

Additional December Certification Exam Location at SIUC

In addition to our standard location at the Engineers’ Club, ASQ St. Louis is offering December certification exams at SIUC (Southern Illinois University Carbondale). Please note that the registration deadline for the December exams is October 12, 2007.

Will Meyer, our Certification Chair, has coordinated with SIUC Student Sub-Section's Chair, Aspen D'Costa, and ASQ’s Linda Gruetter to make this additional testing location possible. We have setup a testing site and proctor at SIU.

Our official exam site will still be the Engineers Club (each section has only one registered site); however, if anyone requests it (or they are identified by their mailing address), we can route the exam to SIU. Those identified for SIU will get an appropriate seating letter in advance specifying their test site - this advance notice will allow the applicant to correct or move their seating location if required.

There were several questions and comments received on the comments form:

Programs on TS and EHS quality topics.
I am in the process of planning the spring speakers, if you know a good speaker that would be very helpful.
Program on lean concepts applied to hospitals and healthcare.
I am working with a healthcare provider to arrange for them to speak at a spring meeting and hope to have the details finalized soon.
Programs on Six Sigma, Design for Six Sigma, and new product development.
If you have a recommendation for a dynamic speaker, please let me know. As I plan for the spring meetings, I will certainly look for a speaker in these areas.

The ASQ Certification Maestro

William Meyer, CQI, CQE, CQA, MoQ/OE, CRE, CSQE, CQT, CQIA, SSBB, CCT, CQPA, CHA, CBA, SSGB

William C. Meyer, a Senior Member of ASQ and an active ASQ St. Louis Section Member, has received all 14 certifications offered by ASQ. This makes him one of only 7 people, nationally, to have achieved this milestone. Will is currently the CQIA Certification Chair for ASQ National and serves in the Ishikawa Medal Committee.

Will has been actively involved with ASQ since 1998, when he started serving as a volunteer for ASQ’s certification program. He serves in that capacity to this date. In 2001, Will was the Treasurer and the Chair-Elect of ASQ Louisville and became the Section Chair the following year. During 2003 to 2006, Will was the Section Auditor, and from 2002 to 2006, he served as the CQIA Subcommittee Liaison for ASQ National.

In 2005, Will became the Treasurer of ASQ St. Louis. The following year, he took the role of Assistant Treasurer, helping the new Treasurer and serving as the 2006 Spring Conference Treasurer. Currently, Will is the section Audit Chair, providing valuable feedback on section finances and ASQ regulations.

ASQ St. Louis would like to congratulate Will on achieving this important milestone and for his continued support and service to the section and ASQ.

Members now have another way to log on to the ASQ member Web site: with their e-mail address! If you have given ASQ your e-mail address, you can now use it as your log-in ID. Simply type the same e-mail address you gave to ASQ in the Log-in ID box. Your password remains the same as if you had logged in using your member number. It's that simple. If you have any questions regarding log-in, please contact ASQ Customer Care.

Journal of Quality Technology Seeks Case Studies

The Journal of Quality Technology (JQT) has created a new Case Studies department and is actively seeking submissions from engineers and statisticians.

Case studies may focus on new techniques or existing methods applied in an interesting context. Submissions should provide instructive examples, illustrated with data so that readers can reproduce the results. Papers must be written in the specific format described on the case study instructions page.

ASQ Looking for a Few Good Workshop Volunteers

ASQ St. Louis Achieves Total Quality Level, Earns Gold Excellence Award

ASQ St. Louis is one of 98 ASQ sections that reached the Total Quality level in 2005-06.

ASQ's Section Management Process (SMP) is a section management model that has been developed to assist sections in their planning and implementation of services and programs that will meet the needs of current and future members.

Total Quality is one of the highest levels of achievement in SMP for the 2005-06 fiscal year. Sections that reached Total Quality proved their dedication and commitment by developing a business plan that provides valuable quality programs and services to their members and achieved at least 75 percent of these set objectives.

The St. Louis Section was also one of 45 ASQ sections to receive the Gold Excellence Award for the 2005-06 fiscal year.

Section Excellence is one of the highest levels of achievement in SMP, and the only one determined by section members. Sections that reached any level of Section Excellence proved their dedication and commitment to providing quality programs and services. The section is awarded with section excellence by meeting or exceeding the Society’s objectives in satisfaction and loyalty and by meeting or exceeding their retention rate from the previous membership year.

ASQ St. Louis thanks the Leadership Committee under the chairmanship of Rob Herhold and all section members for these important achievements.
