Some people are able to overcome the most horrific personal tragedies and succeed against overwhelming odds. Others are devastated by relatively minor occurrences and never regain their composure. One company will weather the storm of disaster and emerge stronger than ever, while another firm facing the same challenges will collapse faster than a house of cards. How is it that some individuals and organizations are able to weather the storm and others are not? The reasons can be summarized in one word – resilience.

Download
PDF Flyer

In this presentation, you’ll meet Joseph Lisle Williams who, at the age of twenty, was attacked by a grizzly bear while taking an evening hike through Glacier National Park. Through a terrifying forty-five minute ordeal, he drew upon his innate resilience to survive. Subsequently, he has continued to develop and enhance the skills that are critical to achieving individual and organizational resilience in the face of any crisis. He also stresses the importance of applying these principles to the minor irritations of everyday life – as a way to keep them from becoming major catastrophes. This presentation offers an engaging, humorous, and practical approach for understanding and developing this essential attribute.

Presentation Objectives:

Learn the seven components that make up the resilient character

Understand the need for resilience to deal with both crisis situations and daily challenges

Learn how to identify opportunities to build individual resiliency skills

Understand how to use resiliency to manage stressful situations

Learn how to build organizational resilience

About the Speaker
In addition to holding the distinction of being one of the few people who has actually been eaten by a bear, Joseph Williams is President of Jordan Marketing, Ltd, a St. Louis-based food brokerage firm. During his career as an executive in the food industry, Mr. Williams has held senior management positions with such firms as Banquet Foods, Con-Agra, and Golden Valley Microwave. He lives in Chesterfield, Missouri.

Please register by Monday, September 15, by visiting the online registration page (click here). However, the data analysis often leaves the stories respondents tell out of the final report and lost to decision makers. Open-ended questions are often left unanalyzed or fed back without a supporting structure from which fact-based decisions can be drawn. As a result, the voice of the respondent is often diminished or distorted.

Some of the more common barriers to the effective use of open-ended questions are: poorly written questions, ineffective data analysis and unproductive presentation of results. When used properly, open-ended data can provide a story that enriches the quantitative results of a survey or questionnaire, while measuring up to the same rigorous methodological standards as the quantitative data.

This interactive session provides an introduction into the methodology for analyzing open-ended questionnaire data. It also covers writing good questions and sharing results from open-ended responses in ways that engage business partners and accurately represent the themes in the data.

About the Speaker

Bob is a partner with the Leadership Effect. With over fifteen years of consulting experience, Bob brings expertise in organizational survey design and analysis, competency modeling and facilitating sessions with senior teams.

Prior to founding the Leadership Effect with Rik Nemanick, Bob held positions with several consulting organizations ranging from boutique firms to international assessment houses. Through those experiences Bob honed his skills as an Organizational Psychologist. His experience has allowed him to use his expertise in research methodology and statistical analysis to develop tools to measure organizational effectiveness through survey techniques. He has been deeply involved in the development and implementation of leadership development programs and organizational development initiatives. Additionally, Bob is a skilled facilitator who is able to gain focus and real commitment from teams of all types and at all levels.

Bob has worked with many clients from the Fortune 500 to small family businesses and he has served as an adjunct faculty member at Southern Illinois University and Saint Louis University. Bob holds a doctorate in Organizational Psychology from Saint Louis University.

Second Presentation
Mistake Proofing - Not Just for Manufacturing
Presented by Sam Hoskins, Mistake-Proofing

Mistake-Proofing is a primary Lean tool as developed by Shigeo Shingo and Toyota. They found that human error was the most prevalent cause of defects. In any aspect of any process, the essential component is people, and even highly skilled people make mistakes. These errors are the root causes that develop into larger consequences.

Mistake-Proofing seeks to prevent those basic errors from happening in the first place. Therefore, the first step to effective Mistake-Proofing is to accept that human errors do occur. This presentation will give many real examples, including heathcare, of Mistake-Proofing devices and how they were developed.

Using a simple root-cause and brainstorming process, a device or method can be easily developed which will prevent that specific error from ever happening again. This presentation is an overview of human errors, the conditions that can set us up for failure, and finally an examination of some specific tools needed to quickly develop effective Mistake-Proofing devices, permanently eliminating the possibility of that error happening again.

There is ample opportunity to use Mistake-Proofing in healthcare. An oft-quoted statistic from the Institute of Medicine says there are up to 98,000 patient deaths per year resulting from human errors.

As the Lean tools continue to migrate from manufacturing into healthcare, Mistake-Proofing will be shown to be invaluable. The primary advantage of using Mistake-Proofing is realized by keeping a narrow focus on the problem you are trying to prevent. Working in small teams, and using a reliable method, look at your latest error and brainstorm a low-cost/no-cost solution to keep it from reoccurring.

The best ideas are often simple ones. The idea is to rapidly implement lots of small M-P devices, rather than going through the process of making sweeping changes.

About the Speaker

Sam Hoskins has extensive hands-on experience in Mistake-Proofing, one of the most powerful of the Lean tools. He spent 12 years as a manufacturing quality engineer and quality manager for an international commercial explosives manufacturer. His projects included ergonomic and safety improvements to the workplace, machine reliability, various cost reductions, and, of course, Mistake-Proofing.

Sam authored the Mistake-Proofing portion of the Ensign-Bickford Company’s application for the 2002 Shingo Prize for Excellence in Manufacturing, which they won. He has led dozens of successful M-P events, which resulted in large gains in safety, quality, and productivity.

He is an experienced instructor in the workplace and has also taught several aircraft technology courses at Southern Illinois University. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, a Master’s in Manufacturing Systems, is a certified Incident Commander and is an ASQ-certified Six Sigma Black Belt.

About a year and a half ago, Sam started MistakeProofing.Net to provide consulting and hands-on training to manufacturing and healthcare organizations. He is closely associated with Lean Hospitals in Connecticut, where he recently conducted the first two-day Mistake-Proofing for Healthcare event at a New England hospital.

For fun, Sam is modifying his own experimental aircraft, which he built and now flies in cross-country races.

Please register by Monday, March 19, by visiting the online registration page (click here). Unfortunately, many struggle to attain, let alone sustain, process excellence, in spite of their efforts to install improvement approaches such as six sigma and lean practices. What’s holding them back?

With most implementation efforts, project teams and training courses are used to drive the performance improvement initiative. While a project team approach, where a select percentage of employees regularly participate in improvement activities, can deliver significant short term gains, it is not enough to either build the use of these techniques into an organization’s work culture or create a way of doing work that is sustainable over the long term.

The small percentage of truly high performance organizations that exists has figured this out. They realize that sustained success over time cannot be realized by relying on project teams and training alone. Instead, they design their work systems to make it mandatory that each employee, and in particular, each process owner, both learn these skills and use them on a daily basis. This presentation will help you create a plan for making such changes yourself.

After-Dinner Presentation (Session II)

Process Excellence from the Inside Out – Who Needs Top-Down Support?

Presented by Kevin McManus
Performance Improvement Coach, Great Systems

While it may be frustrating to do, you can make change happen within your own sphere of influence even when those you report to don’t support you, or when the executive team won’t support an organization wide process excellence initiative. By using the basic tools that high performance companies regularly use on those processes you can directly influence, you can both improve your own understanding of how these tools can work and help demonstrate to others that effective tool use does make a difference.

The personal pursuit of process excellence is really not that complicated. All you really need to do is define those processes you own, the customers of those processes, the counts and measures that are needed to gauge process improvement, and the waste streams that are preventing you from attaining higher levels of performance. Once you have done this, you can find the root causes of that waste, implement corrective actions to address those root causes, and continue to measure process performance to see if your changes are having the desired effects.

In this workshop, you will set up the basic process definition and measurement tools that are needed to drive process excellence from the inside out.

Workshop Objectives:

In this workshop, you will learn how to:

Use a process definition matrix to define your key processes

Set up a spreadsheet for tracking and trending the performance of any process

Define a waste incident database to help you find high leverage waste areas

Create a plan for addressing your key process problems

About the Speaker

Kevin McManus is a performance improvement coach for Great Systems! and an international trainer for the TapRooT root cause analysis process. We’ll discuss how the human element impacts the success of any business and how business processes and products can be improved by understanding how people are driven to behave and how development teams can use an individual’s method of operation, or MO, to increase creative problem solving and organizational effectiveness.

In any business success depends on creating a system that causes the employees and the consumers to take action in a certain fashion, experience a sense of satisfaction from having taken that action, and become motivated to repeat that action or take further action. Understanding conation; or the instincts that cause people to take action in certain ways that are natural and predictable, has powerful implication both in creating a highly functioning workforce and in creating products and services that resonate with the end user.

Objectives:

Attendees gain insights into design that is not simply intuitive, but instinctive.

Participants learn techniques for engaging and satisfying instinctive needs of others.

Development strategies improve when you understand how individuals are “hard-wired” to take action.

Development teams create multi-dimensional services more efficiently when they have instinctive synergy.

Development teams will avoid inertia or conflict when they have instinctive synergy.

About the Speaker

Dixie Gillaspie is the co-founder and President of Pure Synchrony, a “people-focused business consulting firm.” Whether coaching a business leader or an entire team, Dixie’s strengths are rooted in her ability to quickly hone in on what she terms “disconnects” in a business. Also, the presentation will demonstrate the RED method to assist with some of the existing drawbacks of failure analysis. RED is a risk assessment method that can be applied as early as the conceptual design phase with minimal functional information needed from the product undergoing analysis. In order to mitigate risk and failures RED links failures to product function. The failure linkage also exists between product components so that as the design matures, so can the FMEA analysis. These linkages provide designers the ability to use catalogued historical failures as to prevent failures in new designs or redesigns. RED reuses failure information via matrix manipulations which calculate preliminary risk likelihood and consequence for specific areas of a product. This information is used to contribute significantly to initializing an FMEA. The information automatically pinpoints and ranks areas of concern in the product so that engineers can focus the significant portion of their efforts on risk mitigation.

Dr. Grantham Lough joined the Interdisciplinary Engineering Department of the University of Missouri - Rolla as an Assistant Professor in January of 2006. At UMR she develops and applies risk assessment methodologies to product design principles. These methodologies are aimed at educating novice engineers about critical issues in the design process. Before joining the UMR faculty, Dr. Grantham Lough served as a research scientist for 21st Century Systems where she currently holds a part time position. As part of 21st Century Systems she has added risk assessment techniques to their existing defense software products. Also, she was involved with projects to identify both hardware and software failures in mechatronic systems.

Second Presentation:
Dialogic approaches to organizational learning and effectiveness
Presented by Ray Luechtefeld, Ph.D.

Ray will present a common focus on the centrality of communication and dialogue to organization to increase team effectiveness. Fairly simple interventions in a conversation can significantly improve team performance. An experiment involving more than one hundred teams working in a problem-solving simulation showed that exposure to these interventions improved the quantitative measure of team performance. Improved team performance is the result of an improved ability to constructively handle conflict. Teams exposed to interventions are able to share information more effectively and come up with win-win solutions more readily than teams not exposed to the interventions.

Dr. Luechtefeld is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering in the University of Missouri - Rolla. He received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Missouri - Rolla, his MBA from the University of Minnesota, and his Ph.D. from Boston College. Dr. Luechtefeld has nine years of industrial experience as a Development Engineer with IBM. He has consulted to numerous businesses and organizations and is a Senior Member of IEEE.

Please register by Monday, September 17, by visiting the online registration page (click here).
