April Membership Meeting at the 2008 Spring Quality Conference

The April Membership Meeting this year will coincide with the Dinner Keynote Address of our section's Spring Quality Conference. The event will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Clayton on Thursday, April 3. Mike Micklewright will impersonate Dr. W. Edwards Deming and deliver the keynote address. Post dinner events will include section awards and elections.

Keynote Address by Mike Micklewright as Dr. Deming

Mike Micklewright

Mike Micklewright is a dynamic speaker, actor, comedian, motivationist, creatician, business and quality consultant, and trainer based in the Chicago area. Mike provides a unique look into the application of business and quality theories into our everyday lives. Mike has written, acted in, produced, and sells his own line of training videos.

Mike also performs stand-up comedy routine called, “Shitsu Kigeki, If It’s Japanese, It’s Got to be Good!”, a routine that pokes fun at quality, Lean, Six Sigma, Consultants, Auditors, Leadership, and ISO 9001in the areas of business and quality.

Most recently, Mike has started to perform a Dr. W. Edwards Deming impersonation and a Dr. Deming televangelist, to further promote the teachings of our greatest quality guru.

Not afraid of saying it like it is, Mike writes his own column in QualityInsider.com, where he is known as The Whys Guy. Mike was voted as one of the Best Speakers at the 2006 International Conference on ISO 9001.

Mike specializes in ISO 9001, Lean, Leadership, Deming, and Six Sigma. Mike is an ASQ Certified Six Sigma Black Belt, Quality Auditor, Quality Engineer, and Quality Manager.

After graduating with an engineering degree from the University of Illinois, Mike worked for the Saturn Corporation of GM Corp. and Seaquist Perfect Dispensing, and since ‘94 as an independent consultant

Section Awards and Elections

In this segment the ASQ St. Louis section will recognize individuals who have contributed to the advancement of the section. The Section Scholorship recipient will also be announced. The awards will be followed by elections to the 2008-2009 ASQ St. Louis Leadership Committee.

March 18, 2008 Membership Meeting Highlights

First Presentation

Speed Networking
Facilitated by Beth Cudney, Assistant Professor, Missouri University of Science & Technology, and Section Chair-Elect Steve Mundwiller, Director of Quality, Bizmanualz.

Speed networking is a structured approach to make potential business contacts. It allows people to meet and talk to at least 4 times as many new contacts as a normal event. This event will enable you to talk to individuals about your business and hear about others businesses. Come make promising new business contacts and bring business cards!!!

About the Speakers

Beth Cudney

Beth Cudney, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor at Missouri University of Science and Technology. She holds a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from North Carolina State University, Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Hartford, MBA from the University of Hartford, and a Ph.D. in Engineering Management from the University of Missouri – Rolla. Beth also holds several ASQ Certifications including Certified Quality Engineer, Certified Six Sigma Black Belt, Certified Quality Process Analyst, and Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence.

Steve Mundwiller

Steve Mundwiller is the current Chair-Elect for the St. Louis ASQ Section, which puts him in the role of Spring Conference Chair. Steve has served on the Leadership Committee since 2004, and has also served the St. Louis ASQ section as an instructor for the CQA Refresher Class.

Steve is involved with developing and improving the Quality System at Bizmanualz, Inc., as well as developing improved business systems for client companies. Periodically, Steve will also lead training sessions for topics in ISO 9000, Internal Auditing, Quality Tools, Root Cause Analysis, Statistical Process Control, and Manufacturing Improvement.

Prior to joining the staff at Bizmanualz, Steve was the Principal at SME Quality Resources. SME Quality Resources provided consulting services, training & mentoring, and systems development to manufacturing sectors, both public and private. In addition, Steve has been an instructor for St. Louis Community College, teaching classes in ISO 9000 and Quality Tools.

Steve’s prior experience includes many years improving, developing, implementing, and auditing in the pharmaceutical, medical device industries.


Second Presentation

Fun in the Workplace – A Quality Idea
Presented by Sally Young, Quality Engineer & Six Sigma Master Black Belt, Boeing

The words "fun" and "work" may seem totally unrelated. However, this session will provide examples of how you can have fun at work. Building upon information gained at the 2007 ASQ World Conference session "Fun in the Workplace -- A Quality Idea", we will explore some ways to introduce fun into the workplace.

About the Speaker

Sally Young

Sally Young is currently a Quality Engineer and Six Sigma Master Black Belt for The Boeing Company in St. Louis. She has served the Quality organizations of McDonnell Douglas / Boeing for 26 years supporting manufacturing, program and functional operations. Having
been involved in technical fields throughout her career (MS and BS in Mathematics from SIU-Edwardsville and the Quality profession), she has learned the value of incorporating fun into the job. Over the years, she has developed techniques to incorporate fun into learning, project
management and the daily work environment. In addition to her quality role, she designed and implemented the course "What Seeds Are You Planting?", a course on valuing and appreciating others.
