One way that we are able to affect these changes is to have a Performance Engineer based in our hospitals.

A Performance Engineer is a "change agent" for process improvement both in operational and clinical systems. Facilitating improvement in work processes most effectively through a team approach, the engineer leads the effort to document, review and improve operational and clinical processes. This effort should result in new work processes that minimize bottlenecks, reduce delays and improve the timeliness and quality of patient care. The engineer also can bring to the table "best practices" and help in the implementation of these more efficient processes. The engineer can also educate and motivate staff at all levels to objectively analyze their own work and simplify daily activities. The engineer is able to assist in the development of departmental labor budgets based on workload standards and volume projections and help managers understand how to more effectively staff according to the fluctuations in daily workload.
